Dr Paul Funston
Wildlife Photographer
Paul is one of Africa’s leading lion conservationists, with over 30 years of field experience across the continent’s most iconic landscapes. Holding a PhD in Zoology from the University of Pretoria, Paul has dedicated his career to protecting lions through science-led conservation, community partnerships, and landscape restoration.
As former Director of Panthera’s Lion Program, he led initiatives across Africa to expand protected areas, reduce human-lion conflict, and combat poaching. Today, as Director of African Lion Conservation (PTY) LTD, Paul advises governments, conservation agencies, NGOs, and private reserves on predator management, habitat restoration, and conservation policy.
Alongside his consulting, Paul works as a filmmaker’s fixer, conservation safari leader, and trainer of rangers and guides, sharing his deep knowledge of lion ecology. A passionate photographer and storyteller, he continues to champion Africa’s wild places, with an unshakeable commitment to keeping lions on the landscape.
