Light of the Suri

In 2023 Mark Overgaard and Shem Compion returned to Suri land in the Omo Valley of Ethiopia. This film is primarily the story of the launch of "Light of the Suri," a much-needed project to revive mother tongue education among the Suri people. The PhotoMashatu Hide

Filmed in 2012, this film offers one of the first high end video productions filmed from the Underground hide at Mashatu. This hide offers a unique perspective on wildlife photography, with a diverse variety of species visiting on a daily basis- the highlight of course being the elephants that visit you a few meters away. The hide was built and fully customised specifically for photographers to make sure the resulting images are the best you can get. Filmed by Abraham Joffe and Untitled Productions.

The Eloquent Suri of Ethiopia 2022

This film, about the Eloquent Suri of Ethiopia project led by Mark Overgaard, is based on a visit to the Suri with Shem Compion in 2021. The film explores various aspects of Suri culture, including their beautiful body adornment traditions. It also introduces the Suri Literacy Project, which helped to bring a written form of Suri into being, but unfortunately ended in 2021, just before this visit. Click here for more info.
